Physical Self-Construal

People with a highly physical self-construal (PhySC) define themselves based on their physical body and its capabilities. Our research on this form of self-definition is just getting started, but we already have developed a valid and reliable measure for it.

My research to this point is mostly developing and validating the measure of PhySC, as well as linking it to gender roles and gender-typed outcomes. I believe that self-construal is more explanatory of gender-typed outcomes than gender identity. As you can see, we're just getting started!

Future research will examine how PhySC is linked to hormones, aptitudes, career interests, relationship formation and maintenance, cultural norms, aggression, and leisure activities.
